Military ranks and insignia of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Military rank system and military insignia of Bosnia and Herzegovina shows the military rank system and insignias used by the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina that existed from 1992 to 2005 and the current Armed Forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina (OSBIH - Oružane Snage Bosne i Hercegovine) that exists from 2006 to present. The ranks are defined in Article 155, Article 156, Article 157 and Article 158 of the Law on Service in the Armed Forces of Bosnia-Herzegovina.[1]

Historical ranks

Rank insignia in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina were (firstly proposed) to be worn on the shoulders, sleeve and cap[4], later on, the shoulders and left side (of the chest) of uniform[5], and range up to the highest rank of Army general.

The first system of ranks in the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina was standardized at the beginning of August 1992.[6] The following ranks were introduced: Private first class and Corporal for enlisted;[7] Sergeant, Sergeant first class, Warrant officer and Chief warrant officer for non-commissioned officers;[8] Lieutenant, Captain, Colonel and Brigadier for commissioned officers;[9] Brigadier general, Divisional general and Army general for general ranks.[10]

Appropriate insignia and duties for the ranks were also regulated, along with the appearance and stylisation which were based on the adopted state and army symbols and insignia.[11] Since the immediate implementation of officer training was delayed, this system of ranks remained unused.

However, in July 1993, a new military rank system was introduced, they were defined as “wartime ranks”, in which changes were made to the gradation of non-commissioned (Staff sergeant and Master sergeant) and commissioned officers (Senior lieutenant, Senior captain, Major and Brigadier).[12] The appearance and stylisation remained similar to the previous system and were based on the army insignia, and the colors of the state symbols.[5] By the end of 1993, this proces of officer gradation was implemented, 9.007 commissioned and 8.669 non-commissioned officers were appointed.[13]

Following the signing of the Washington Agreement[14] on March 18, 1994, and creation of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina along with Croatian Defence Council ware integrated into newly formed Army of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.[15] As a result new rank system, appearance and stylisation was introduced.

Furthermore as a result of Dayton Agreement[16], which established peace, and subsequent defense reform which led to formation of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina along with new military ranks and insignia appearance and style.[17]
